New power line likely for Eyre Peninsula

South Australian electricity transmission company ElectraNet has recommended building a new transmission line on Eyre Peninsula to secure local supplies.

A $240 million transmission line is likely to built on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula to secure electricity supplies.

Transmission company ElectraNet has released a report on supply options for the region, recommending the line from Cultana to Port Lincoln be built by the end of 2021.

"The key driver for this project is to deliver a solution that provides the greatest benefits to the community while keeping costs as low as possible for electricity customers," ElectraNet chief executive Steve Masters said on Thursday.

"Our proposed new transmission line from Cultana to Port Lincoln will increase power reliability to Eyre Peninsula homes and businesses, remove network constraints, allow for new renewable energy developments and enables us to more cost-effectively expand the network in the future."

The project needs approval from energy regulators but is expected to add as little as 10 cents to annual electricity bills.

Parts of SA's Eyre Peninsula were the hardest hit during the infamous statewide black in September 2016 when freak storms brought down major transmission lines in the mid-north.

Some properties were without power for several days as authorities worked to restore services.

Businesses in the region lost thousands of dollars in trade, production and stock.

ElectraNet said the new 132-kilovolt double-circuit transmission line would include a provision to upgrade a section from Cultana to Yadnarie to 275 kv when needed.

The company has already received approval to spend $80 million on upgrading an existing line.
