New rays of hope for solar industry

A new leasing agreement is expected to give the solar industry a boost, and shake the perception of the technology being too costly for ordinary Australians to afford.

The agreement allows customers to lease the solar panels from renewable energy companies and pay them off over a specified period.

This bypasses the upfront payments that customers often find prohibitive.

It also means that a customer's energy bills will remain static while the solar panels are being paid off.

“It helps customers save money from day one,” says Jeremy Rich, the CEO of Energy Matters, one of the first companies in Australia to offer the leasing model.

After the panels have been paid off, customers can source their solar energy needs for free.

“The upfront cost has been a barrier for many people,” says Sean Lucy from Green Lantern Consulting.

“The potential to actually lock in a fixed price is quite attractive.”

Solar power is also expected to get a boost from the federal government's carbon tax, which has caused uncertainty in electricity prices.
