New round of tax cuts come into play

Workers should find a few dollars extra in their paypackets from today, as the federal government rolls out the third and final stage of its income tax cuts.

Also from today, minimum wage earners will get an extra 26 dollars a week from the Fair Work Australia award, established last month, which lifts the minimum wage to 570 dollars a week.

However, one economist doubts people will be rushing off to the shops to spend their new wealth, given the air of uncertainty in the community.

They say one of the factors is uncertainty over an imminent election being called.

A worker on 50-thousand dollars a year will get a tax cut of 450 dollars, while someone on 80-thousand dollars will receive an extra 300 dollars a year.
