New SA minister urges Anzac Day turn-out

South Australia's new Veterans' Affairs Minister has called on local residents to attend an Anzac Day service this year.

South Australia's new Veterans' Affairs Minister has urged people to show support for the nation's servicemen and women by attending an Anzac Day ceremony in this special commemorative year.

Zoe Bettison, who took on the portfolio when the state Labor government was returned in March, says this year's memorials and activities are particularly special, marking 100 years since the start of World War I.

"Anzac Day enables Australians an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of our brave service men and women and to honour their memory," she said.

"I encourage all South Australians to support our service men and women, past and present, and attend one of the many ceremonies and memorials being held across the state."

As well as the traditional dawn service at the city war memorial and the march through the centre of Adelaide, Anzac Day will also be marked this year by a series of vigils conducted both in the city and at various regional locations by youth organisations.

Group including Scouts, Navy cadets and St John Ambulance volunteers are among those who will take part with 13- to 18-year-olds involved in keeping guard at memorials and other venues in the hours before dawn services begin.

This year's Anzac Day activities also come just two days after the visit to Adelaide by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and just a month after the city's Edinburgh air force base celebrated its 60th anniversary.
