All light commercial vehicles sold in Australia will soon have to include new safety features.

The federal government will make electronic stability control (ESC) and a brake assist system (BAS) compulsory on all light commercial vehicles from November, 2015.

The systems have already been made compulsory on passenger cars and passenger vans.

ESC is an advanced stability system that automatically applies the brakes to individual wheels in an emergency, helping the driver to steer safely.

A BAS detects when a driver is attempting to brake hard and helps stop the vehicle as quickly as possible.

Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs said following the success of ESC for passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles became the next challenge.

The light commercial vehicle market was growing in Australia, with an increasing number being purchased as both work and family vehicles, he said.
