Foreign Minister Julie Bishop wants to slap new sanctions on North Korea over its "reckless" nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The new sanctions will target the rogue nation's extractives industry and its vessels.

North Korea attracted international scorn in mid-February, after it fired a ballistic missile that flew about 500 kilometres towards Japan before splashing into the sea east of the Korean peninsula.
