A new Senate committee will investigate reduced federal government funding for schools.

The government voted against the inquiry, arguing the basis of establishing it was false given levels of school funding were higher than ever.

The motion by Labor frontbencher Sam Dastyari was agreed to in the Senate on Thursday.
