New stadium christened by streaker

It was a day of firsts at Perth's new $1.5 billion stadium on Sunday - with a fleet-footed streaker drawing the biggest cheer.

A sellout crowd attended the final ODI clash between Australia and England at Optus Stadium - the venue's first official sporting event.

Hometown hero Andrew Tye claimed career-best figures of 5-46 to help dismiss England for 259.

The cheer when Tye claimed his fifth scalp was deafening.

But the crowd went ballistic in the 17th over of Australia's innings when a streaker ran onto the ground.

The man jogged around and soaked up the atmosphere before being tackled by a security guard.

But he managed to wiggle out of the tackle and evade two others before continuing his moment in the afternoon sun.

Eventually, he had enough, and walked towards security guards with his hands together in a hand-cuff position.

Despite his surrender, he was floored by a security guard before being escorted away to a big ovation.

But it wasn't all light-hearted at the venue's opening event, with a man tasered by police over his behaviour.

The incident was partly captured on video by a fellow spectator, with two police officers tackling the man to the ground on the concrete concourse inside the stadium.

"You've been tasered mate," a police officer said to the man after restraining him.

Even before all the other distractions began, a crowd of 53,781 turned out for the match.

It was the largest crowd ever to attend a sporting event in Western Australia, eclipsing the 52,781 on hand to watch the WAFL grand final in 1979 at Subiaco Oval.

"The facilities here are truly world-class and Optus Stadium really puts Perth on the map to hold more international events," Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said in a statement.

Another sellout crowd will attend Thursday's BBL semi-final between the Perth Scorchers and Hobart Hurricanes.
