A factor which may have impacted on the expansion of wind driven technology in Australia was the ongoing claim by people living near turbines that their health had been impacted.
This theory is set to be put to the test by researchers at the Sydney University-affiliated Woolcock Institute of Medical Research.
The institute is working with acoustics experts to test surrounding inaudible, or infrasound noises, generated by wind turbines.
A sample of 40 people, who are prone to being disturbed by noise, will face three weekends in a purpose-built laboratory and exposed to silence, traffic noise and infrasound.
The researchers will monitor their health throughout the experiment, especially as they sleep.
There are about 80 windfarms in Australia and around 2000 turbines.
The research outcomes are expected be released in 2020 and the findings are expected to influence energy policymakers.
Sound expert Dr Renzo Tonin, who is working on the research, said: "We're not relying on people's judgement as to whether they're being effected or not, We're actually measuring real physical constants that relate to their health."
