New Supercars track like Bathurst: Whincup

Seven-time Supercars series champion Jamie Whincup has compared new addition The Bend, South Australia to the Bathurst 1000 ahead of its official debut.

It has already claimed some of Supercars' biggest names.

But it seems the category's newest circuit The Bend in South Australia looks set to wrack up plenty more scalps this weekend after seven-time series champion Jamie Whincup compared the remote venue's layout to the infamously unforgiving Bathurst 1000 track.

Series leader Scott McLaughlin, Whincup and Holden great Craig Lowndes were among the stars who looked like mere mortals in their first crack at Tailem Bend, one hour's drive southeast of Adelaide.

McLaughlin joked the demanding 18-turn, 4.95km circuit ensured he "looked like a Gumby" after he continuously speared off the track at Friday's practice as drivers tried to get their bearings before The Bend makes its official Supercars debut this weekend.

Driver after driver found the dirt as they tried to negotiate their way around the tough course in two 45 minute practice sessions on Friday.

And it may get worse before it gets better judging by Whincup's feedback.

"The whole circuit is challenging and unique in itself. It's like a Bathurst lap," said Holden legend Whincup who is third in the standings.

"You can be three quarters of the way around the lap thinking 'this is pretty good' but you still have to get the job done in the end."

Whincup's teammate Shane van Gisbergen - second in the standings just 89 points behind Ford's McLaughlin - set the tone with the fastest lap from Friday's practice.

As demanding as it was, Whincup had no complaints with the uncompromising track.

"The last corner is high speed. It's one of the most challenging corners on the circuit," Whincup beamed.

"It's refreshing. To go to a new track and with the challenge of trying to make the car go around as quick as you can, it's a good thing.

"It's a really challenging track and will offer some great racing."

Even van Gisbergen - one of only a handful of Supercars drivers who have raced at the track after competing in April's Australian GT race - admitted he still had no idea how to master the SA track.

"It's unpredictable what you're going to get," he said.

"On my (fastest) lap, you can see I'm making multiple turn-ins, not knowing what I was going to get when you turn the wheel."

The Bend SuperSprint round officially begins with a 120km race on Saturday before Sunday's 200km finale.
