New technology to help Qld police on beat

Queensland police will soon use a custom-built mobile app to search for people's details while on the beat.

It's not quite RoboCop, but Queensland police will embrace new mobile technology to check up on citizens while on the beat.

From October, 50 officers will be given smart phones or tablets installed with a custom-built police app that will let them instantly search police data bases remotely.

Officers currently have to radio requests to a communications room and wait for a response, which can cause delays during peak times.

Police Minister Jack Dempsey says the new technology will save crews about half an hour each shift.

"With the mobile system, police officers will have all that information at their fingertips, saving officers waiting time and allowing them to move on to other jobs," Mr Dempsey said in a statement.

Commissioner Ian Stewart said the mobile technology would help police in problem areas and boost safety.

Police will be able to remotely look up information on people, vehicles and addresses through police, CrimTrac and Department of Transport database searches.
