New watchdog provides health scrutiny

The government is setting up a new independent watchdog, which Health Minister Nicola Roxon says will tell everyone how Australia's health services are performing.

Ms Roxon says the National Health Performance Authority will open the health and hospital system to new levels of national transparency and accountability.

Under last month's 20 billion dollar draft COAG agreement with the states and territories .. the performance authority is meant to be established by July.

Introducing legislation today Ms Roxon said it'll be a critical element in the new health system.
