Millions of people will gather in capital cities around the country to farewell 2018.

Here is what forecasters say the weather gods have in store.

Brisbane

The sun will likely shine on Brisbane through the day and a light breeze should fan the city in the afternoon.

However, it is a different story in far north Queensland.

People are being urged to prepare emergency kits because a tropical low with damaging winds is dumping buckets of torrential rain that could cause flash flooding.

The weather bureau says the monsoon trough is very active and there is the potential for a cyclone to develop near Cape York Peninsula by New Year’s Eve or January 1.

It should be fine and mostly sunny elsewhere in the state.

Sydney

Forecasters are predicting a warm and humid end to 2018 in the high 20s to low 30s.

In the CBD, there is the chance of a light shower in the early afternoon to evening, but it will hopefully clear in time for the fireworks.

There is also the slight chance of a thunderstorm over western Sydney.

A worst case scenario could see those on the harbour see some lightning flashes and hear thunder.

For most other areas of the state, apart from the far northeast, a light shower or thunderstorm is forecast mainly during the day.

Melbourne

It will be a partly cloudy day in Melbourne, with a small chance of rain in the morning and afternoon.

The evening should be clear and warm, with a light wind breezing through the city.

The rest of Australia

It will be warm in Adelaide, with clear and sunny skies all day.

Canberra will have wind in the afternoon, though that is expected to give way to a clear and balmy evening.

Perth and the rest of southern Western Australia will be clear and sunny, though the north will be hot, wet and stormy.

Hobart will be partly cloudy, with a possible shower rain in morning that is expected the clear by the evening.

Heat, showers and a possible storm are forecast for Darwin and Alice Springs.
