New York has become the first major city in the US to ban cigarette sales to people under the age of 21.
In most places Americans 18 or older can buy them.
It's the latest in a series of moves designed to improve the health of New Yorkers.
US correspondent John Stempin has told Santilla Chingaipe why the city has moved to raise the legal age of buying cigarettes.
