A New Zealander being booted out of Australia has been arrested after a stand-off with police at Sydney airport.

The man's visa had been cancelled on character grounds and he was in the custody of immigration authorities when an incident broke out on Wednesday morning.

NSW Police were called to an airport terminal about 10.50am after the man threatened self harm.

Negotiators brought the stand-off to an end about 40 minutes later and the man was taken to hospital for assessment.

Nobody was injured.
