Newborn Swedish prince to be called Oscar

Sweden's new baby prince has been named Oscar; he is the second child of Crown Princess Victoria and third in line to the throne.

The newest member of Sweden's royal family is to be known as Prince Oscar, King Carl XVI Gustaf has announced at a meeting with the cabinet.

The baby boy, born on Wednesday, is third in line to the throne after his mother, Crown Princess Victoria, and his older sister, Princess Estelle, 4.

His other names are Carl and Olof, and his title would be Duke of Scania, the southernmost province in Sweden, the king said on Thursday.

Oscar is an old family name in the royal family as is Carl, while both Prince Daniel and the baby's paternal grandfather are called Olof.

Sweden in 1980 changed the order of succession so that the monarch's eldest heir, regardless of gender, inherits the throne.
