Middle-class Greeks have told of their need to eat at soup kitchens, due to the economic hardship engulfing the country.

Andreas is a retired merchant seaman, who says he hasn't received his pension in five months, and simply can't afford to feed himself.

Social workers say it is a familiar tale: recession and austerity forcing thousands of once middle-income Greeks into poverty.

From the point of view of people on the street, they've seen their standards of living drop off a precipice.

However, there is a strong sense of resilience and grim determination.

“We're going to make sacrifices, but we're going to survive… this is guaranteed,” he says. This report from CNN.
