Newman takes aim at Frecklington

Former Queensland premier Campbell Newman has publicly criticised new Liberal National Party leader Deb Frecklington for failing to heed his advice about the direction of the party.

The LNP hierarchy last week sent Mr Newman a letter asking him to resign for criticising the party.

Mr Newman refused the request and on Thursday accused Ms Frecklington of not being receptive of advice he had given her in the past.

"Two years ago Deb Frecklington talked to me and said 'how do you think we're going?' and I said, 'Deb, we're not doing well, you're going to lose the next election if you keep going this way'," Mr Newman told Sky News on Thursday.

"Well, she didn't like the advice then and I don't imagine she's going to pick up the phone and ask for my advice now, but it's time they looked at what they need to do to be true to their values, the values of the party and take their fight up to the Labor Party."

It contradicts Ms Frecklington's comments on Wednesday, where she said she was receptive to advice or criticism.

"My door is always open. I think anyone is always welcome to come to me with their issues and concerns, particularly in relation to my parliamentary team or our parliamentary performance, but those matters really are a matter for the LNP themselves," she said.

The LNP under previous leader Tim Nicholls, who was treasurer during Mr Newman's term as premier, suffered a significant slide in its primary vote at the November 25 election, handing victory to Annastacia Palaszczuk's Labor.

Mr Newman said the letter from the LNP was "interesting" but he would not be standing down from the party or his role as a Sky News commentator.

"I take responsibility for what happened in 2015, but I left the party with a primary of 41.3 - we're now down to a primary of around 34 per cent."

"We need to look as a party at the reasons for that and have an open debate about those issues."
