News Corp takes stake in tradie website

With Fairfax having benefited from a property boom in parts of Australia, News Corp Australia hopes to do the same from renovations.

News Corp Australia has acquired a 25 per cent stake in tradie search site hipages.

Sydney-based startup hipages helps people to find and hire tradespeople such as plumbers, electricians, painters and builders, allowing them to invite quotes for jobs and then screen interested businesses through user reviews.

"The investment is part of a wider plan to further develop and grow the property and home services category in Australia," News Corp Australia Peter Tonagh said in a statement on Monday.

Rival media group Fairfax has already enjoyed great success by tapping Australians' love affair with their homes, with its real estate advertising business Domain offsetting a slide in revenues from its print publications.
