News Corp to close seven community papers

News Corp will shut seven of its community newspapers under the Leader banner saying publications in small markets are becoming unsustainable.

News Corp will close seven of its community newspapers under the Leader banner by July 1.

The company says it doesn't know how many jobs will be cut when the Berwick, Brimbank, Free Press, Hobsons Bay, Melbourne, Melton and Wyndham newspapers go because it may be able to redeploy some workers.

A News Corp Australia spokesperson on Monday said the group was continually reshaping its business and investing in areas that would provide returns over the long term.

"The reality is that in today's fragmented market there is more competition than ever before, and in some of our smaller markets, publishing a printed publication is not sustainable," the spokesperson said.

Leader Community News has 26 other titles in the group.
