Newton strengthens to hurricane off Mexico

Storm Newton is now a hurricane off the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Tropical Storm Newton has strengthened into a hurricane, continuing its trajectory toward the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, according to the US National Hurricane Centre.

The storm was about 346km southeast of the tourist resort of Cabo San Lucas at around 4pm local time.

It had maximum sustained winds of 121km/h and was moving northwest, the NHC said.
