'Next time', PM tells Socceroos captain

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has reached out to Socceroo captain Mile Jedinak following the national team's World Cup loss to Peru.

Malcolm Turnbull has sent a text of condolence to Socceroos captain Mile Jedinak.

The prime minister reflected on the national team being eliminated from the World Cup after losing to Peru when prompted by reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.

"The boys gave the contest everything. They were fantastic. They had some bad luck - that's football I guess," Mr Turnbull said.

"Australia backed them every step of the way and, as I said to Mile last night in a message I sent him, we'll do so again, at the next World Cup."
