A local official says the death toll from an attack on a northeast Nigerian village by suspected Islamic extremists has risen to 85.

Dala Lawan said on Tuesday that the first mass burial included 53 bodies, but more corpses still are being found, and some of the injured have died.

He says at least 40 people remain injured.

Many lay in a hospital in the main town Konduga on Tuesday, screaming in pain from bullet wounds and burns suffered when militants set huts ablaze.

Suspected Boko Haram members stormed the Kawuri village weekly market Sunday night, setting off explosives, shooting people and razing more than 300 homes.

The state governor visited Kawuri Tuesday, about 70km southeast of Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram.
