The prime minister says Australian diplomats are working to ensure the safety of a 60 Minutes crew detained in Syria.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says Australian consulate staff in Lebanon are "very focused" on ensuring a detained 60 Minutes TV crew are safe and looked after.

The crew, including senior journalist Tara Brown, are being held for filming the alleged kidnapping of two children in Beirut by their mother.

Mr Turnbull said the Department of Foreign Affairs was speaking with Lebanese authorities and Australia's "very, very professional diplomats" were focused on the crew's safety.
