Nita Green confirmed for Qld senate ticket

Nita Green has been confirmed as the number one Labor senate ticket spot at the party's annual Queensland state conference on Saturday.

Nita Green has been confirmed as Queensland Labor's number one senate pick, following a factional fight over her nomination.

Ms Green was confirmed for first place on the party ticket at Labor's annual state conference in Brisbane on Saturday after the federal executive stepped in to stop a fight within Labor's Left faction.

Some members believed Ms Green was being rushed through and wanted more time to debate, but the party executive stepped in to avoid a potentially damaging debate on the floor of the conference.

The Right's Chris Ketter was confirmed for the second spot with Frank Gilbert from the centrist Old Guard faction will be the third candidate.

The nominations come on the first full day of the weekend conference, which saw federal Labor Leader Bill Shorten as the key to the upcoming federal election.

Mr Shorten said the state provided "ballast" for Labor and announced a $500 million regional roads funding package.

Meanwhile the party's Left and Right factions are in a tug-of-war over how people can join the party, with the Left proposing allowing people to join Labor "groups" such as Labor Women or Rainbow Labor, without joining a local branch of the party.

They say it would allow people with interest in single issues to find a place in Labor, but the Right faction, also known as Labor Forum, are understood to be against that move, saying the party is not a party of single issues.

In addition to internal matters the conference is expected to consider a number of policy resolutions, include calling for the fast-tracking of euthanasia laws and pushing to reduce the amount of religious education in state schools.
