No agreement on Qld abortion bill

A parliamentary committee has failed to reach an agreement over whether to endorse a bill to decriminalise abortion in Queensland.

The LNP members of a Queensland parliamentary committee tasked with investigating a bill to decriminalise abortion have expressed their reservations about the legislation.

The Health, Communities, Disability Services and Domestic and Family Violence Committee handed down its report into independent Cairns MP Rob Pyne's controversial bill on Friday afternoon.

Chair Leanne Linard said the six-member panel had "carefully considered" the proposal but could not reach an agreement over whether to endorse the bill.

"Any public discourse regarding abortion law can be expected to attract a high level of interest," she said in the report.

"Community opinions about abortion are divergent, and often based on deeply held values.

"The committee has sought at all times to be respectful of the range of opinions presented to it."

A statement of reservation at the end of the document showed the committee's division on the issue occurred along party lines.

LNP members Mark McArdle, Mark Robinson and Sid Cramp authored the two-page document, which argued the parliament should only pass legislation "drafted in clear and unambiguous language and not inconsistent with other legislation".

The trio questioned if the bill dealt with all relevant issues or if amendments would be required down the track.

"We have a responsibility to pass clear and unambiguous legislation. We do not believe we are at that stage," it read.

A spokesman for premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told AAP the committee's findings were a matter for them.

An LNP spokeswoman told AAP the party would consider the findings in the report.

"However a parliamentary committee inquiry rejected the bill and all LNP members supported those findings," she said.

Earlier in the day the premier called on all MPs to be respectful when they debated the issue of abortion both inside and outside of parliament.

"People are very emotional about this issue," she said.

Both Labor and the LNP have previously committed to allowing their members to have a conscience vote on the abortion bill.
