No Aussie special treatment on US visa ban

Dual nationals from almost all countries across the world including Australia will be able to travel freely to the US in the wake of Donald Trump's visa ban.

Australian passport holders will have the same level of access to the United States as dual nationals from almost all other countries despite Donald Trump's divisive travel ban.

After days of confusion over how the tough new US visa bans would apply, prime minister Malcolm Turnbull on Tuesday announced his government had "secured exceptions" for Australian dual nationals.

But a US embassy spokesperson on Wednesday said Mr Trump's ban would not restrict travellers from any "unrestricted" countries, even if they hold dual nationality from one of the seven countries named in the ban.

"This executive order does not restrict the travel of dual nationals from any country, so long as they hold the passport of an unrestricted country and possess a valid US visa, if required," the spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The ban temporarily halts the entire US refugee program and bans all entries from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days.

It was initially believed Australian dual nationals would be restricted from entering the US.

"The Australian government has received assurances from the United States administration that all Australian passport holders remain welcome to travel to the US," Mr Turnbull said on Tuesday.

Mr Turnbull has drawn criticism for not publicly criticising the Trump ban as many other world leaders have, but the prime minister has argued when he has frank advice to offer an American president, he will give it privately.
