No Australians are believed to have been injured in a deadly Islamic terror attack at an upmarket hotel and office complex in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

At least seven people are dead and eight wounded after gunmen blasted their way into the compound, which is situated across the road from the Australian embassy.

Consular officials are making urgent inquiries with local authorities to determine whether any Australians were affected by the attack.

"At this time, we are not aware of any Australians being affected," a spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs told AAP.

It is understood all Australian High Commission staff are safe.
