Victoria Police says there are no immediate plans to install body scanners at Melbourne's major sports stadiums, but they are possible in future.

A Herald Sun report on Saturday said the airport-style walk-through weapons detectors will be installed at the MCG, Etihad Stadium and AAMI Park in a bid to thwart terrorism.

However police command said there were no plans at this time to install the scanners.

"The changes described are certainly not imminent at this time," Acting Assistant Commissioner Mick Hermans told reporters on Saturday.

Mr Hermans said the measures are possible in future, depending on the nature of the security environment.

He added such measures are constantly being discussed by police and major event stakeholders.

"Yes, it's possible, but the implementation would be based absolutely on stakeholder engagement," he said.

"Police and the major event stakeholders are always looking at what's available

"It would be a reaction to the current environment, a current risk assessment and any known intelligence."

Mr Hermans added while such security measures possible, they are not inevitable.

"If they were required, we would absolutely be in a position in partnership with major events stakeholders to apply them," he said.

Victoria Police is working with advisory groups - including sporting codes, shopping centres, education institutions, the casino and theatres - to develop agreed standards on security in crowded places.
