No driving for Vic 17-year-olds, says govt

Young Victorians may struggle to get to work or study without a car, but the state government won't act on a report recommending a drop in the P-plate age.

Victoria will not be dropping the P-plate driver age to 17 despite a parliamentary committee recommending it should.

The state is the only one in Australia with a minimum driving age of 18 - a situation putting young people in non-urban areas at risk of missing out on work and study opportunities, the Law Reform, Road and Community Safety Committee found.

But soon after the report was tabled, Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan said the government would not be acting on it.

"We believe it would result in more loss of lives on our roads," Mr Donnellan told reporters.

All the road safety experts also told the committee it did not support the age being lowered, Mr Donnellan said,

The committee made 11 recommendations in a report tabled in Wednesday, including lowering the driving age or creating exemptions for 17-year-old in non-urban areas who need to get to work or education.

It also recommended the government develop a pilot vehicle scheme so young people with limited means have access to an affordable and reliable vehicle for work.
