No need for Corbyn-Shorten switch: Butler

Labor's national president Mark Butler says Australia can't draw too many lessons from the UK election, as he defended Bill Shorten.

There is no need to find a Jeremy Corbyn-like Labor leader in Australia, the ALP national president believes.

Mark Butler admits the UK Labour leader exceeded everyone's expectations in helping secure a hung parliament, but he warns against drawing too many parallels with Australian politics.

"You can't draw lessons from the United States or the UK and import them into Australia," he told reporters in Adelaide on Saturday.

Asked whether the Labor party should look for a leader more like Mr Corbyn, Mr Butler stood by Bill Shorten.

"Bill is doing a fantastic job as Labor leader. We've been united, we've been disciplined and we've been holding this government to account."
