The swings in western Sydney against the federal coalition show no one can take votes for granted, NSW Premier Mike Baird says.

The Liberal leader, who retains power in the state with a large majority built on his popularity in the region, also played down the implications of the federal vote for his conservative government.

"It's a reminder to everyone that you can't take votes for granted, you have to work very hard and certainly that's my job as premier of the state and our government to continue to focus on delivering for the people of NSW," he told reporters on Monday.
