No plans to raise GST: Billson

The federal government insists it has no plans to change the GST in its first term.

Liberal West Australian Premier Colin Barnett reignited the GST debate when he called on the Abbott government to consider lifting the rate of the tax.

But federal Small Business Minister Bruce Billson on Saturday repeated the coalition's election campaign pledge that it wasn't planning any changes to the tax.

"The Abbott coalition team has made it absolutely clear we will not be changing the GST in our first term," he told ABC television.

"We think the commonwealth in particular has a spending problem not a revenue problem."

He defended the government's decision to include the GST in a planned review of the taxation system.

Any changes recommended by the review and adopted by the coalition would be taken to an election "so that there are no surprises and no secrets", Mr Billson added.
