Police and surf life savers are still searching Sydney's northern beaches for a UK tourist who went missing in the water on Saturday night.

A rescue helicopter will join water police, jet skis and inflatable boats sweeping Curl Curl beach where the 31-year-old was last seen by friends about 100m offshore.

A NSW Life Saving spokeswoman has described conditions as "grey and murky".

Police believe the missing man is from Manchester, England, and had only been in the country for a week.
