The Greens say the federal donations laws to political are "utterly inadequate".

There were expectations that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's rumoured donation to the Liberal party would be revealed.

But the Australian Electoral Commission's annual report of political donations sheds no light on the issue.

The Greens electoral issues spokeswoman Lee Rhiannon told AAP on Wednesday that proved the laws were lax.

“It seems Prime Minister Turnbull has used a loophole in the donations laws to avoid scrutiny for another 12 months," she said.

“The prime minister won ’t even tell the public how much he bankrolled his own party. His response is that he has complied with all the rules – and to that the Greens say the rules must change.”
