North Korea blamed for global cyber attack

Australia has blamed North Korea for a "WannaCry" cyber attack in June which crippled businesses and public institutions.

Australia has come out swinging against North Korea after blaming the rogue nation for a ransomware attack that crippled businesses and public institutions across the world in June.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said based on advice from intelligence agencies and consultations with allies, it was clear Pyongyang carried out the "WannaCry" ransomware campaign.

"We condemn North Korea's use of cybercrime which poses a grave risk to the global economy and can have a devastating effect on government operations and services, business activity and the safety and welfare of individuals," he said on Wednesday.
