Residents in the far north Queensland town of Herberton have been told to prepare to leave as firefighters warn a bushfire they are battling could get worse.

The unpredictable blaze is on the northern side of Atherton Herberton Road and is moving in several directions towards Adcock Close, Empress Avenue and Walsh River Road.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services warns crews might not be able to protect every property and advise residents to prepare to leave.
