Northern Peru jolted by 6.3 quake

An area is close to Peru's border with Ecuador has been hit with a 6.3 earthquake but there are no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

A strong magnitude 6.3 earthquake has jolted northern Peru, the US Geological Survey reports.

The quake struck at 7:51pm (1051 AEDT on Sunday) just off Peru's Pacific coast, six kilometres west of Sechura. It had a depth of nine kilometres, the USGS reported.

The area is close to Peru's border with Ecuador.

There are no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.
