It was meant to be a light-hearted Christmas selfie but First Lady Melania Trump has come under fire for a photo she shared on Instagram.

The festive selfie for Christmas Day has sparked a social media debate of what should be expected from the US First Lady.

The selfie, shared on the official FLOTUS Instagram account, shows Ms Trump wearing a Santa hat.

A filter had been applied to the photo to show illuminated flying reindeer.

The photo was captioned '#MerryChristmas'.

Ms Trump's photo has received thousands of retweets since it was posted - along with plenty of comments debating whether the photo was appropriate for a First Lady.

Some felt the photo was poor taste:

Others applauded the image:

On Christmas Eve the White House shared a photo of President Trump and the first lady making phone calls to children across the US.

The calls were made at the president's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach where he helped track Santa Claus' movements with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Santa Tracker.
