NRL clubs play hardball on stadium deal

Rugby league clubs are continuing to negotiate hard with the NRL over its stadium infrastructure deal with the NSW government.

Sydney clubs continue to play hardball with the NRL on the eve of the NSW government's April 1 deadline for a commitment to play at Allianz and ANZ Stadiums as part of its $1.6 billion infrastructure investment.

The state government wants the NRL and its clubs to play about 60 games a season at Sydney's main stadiums before the money is released for them to be rebuilt.

Sydney Roosters have Allianz Stadium as a base and South Sydney and Canterbury call ANZ Stadium home. However that in itself isn't enough to activate the funding.

Such a move would require the likes of Manly, Cronulla and St George Illawarra to commit to playing at either the Moore Park or Homebush venues.

However there remains resistance from clubs in regards to the benefits of moving away from their suburban heartlands, primarily the Sea Eagles and the Sharks.

If the NRL is unable to secure the necessary co-operation ahead of the deadline on Friday, a different arrangement may have to be nutted out, one closer to what Sydney clubs want.

The NRL was tight lipped on Thursday.

"Negotiations with the clubs are continuing," an NRL spokesman told AAP.
