But these days North Queensland playmaker Michael Morgan dismisses his now famous game turning pass in the 2015 grand final as plain dumb luck.
Morgan was again reminded of his back flick that sent Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt over for a crunch try after the siren in last year's decider ahead of Friday night's NRL grand final re-match in Townsville.
It seemed inevitable the try that sent the 2015 decider into golden point - and ultimately sealed by North Queensland - would come up.
But Morgan seemed a tad surprised and even more embarrassed when reminded of his stroke of genius.
"I still see that as being very lucky," Morgan said of that pass.
It should have provided Morgan confidence that he can step up on the big occasion ahead of what looms as another classic derby.
However, Morgan said he was taking nothing for granted as North Queensland tried to keep their title defence on track against their nemesis.
"I don't think about that going into a game, or anything like that," he said.
"We are probably playing a different style of footy and so are they compared to last year anyway.
"Besides, to win these types of games you can't just turn up and expect things to happen.
"To beat them you have to be at your best."
North Queensland coach Paul Green agreed last year's thrilling grand final finish would not provide the Cowboys an edge in the sudden death semi-final on Friday night.
"Last year is done and dusted, it's a whole new ball game," he said.
"If we want to dwell on last year it won't help what we have to do this year."
