NRL player charged with domestic violence

Rising South Sydney playmaker Cody Walker has been charged with domestic violence offences and is at risk of having his NRL contract torn up.

Rising playmaker Cody Walker is at risk of having his NRL contract torn up after he was stood down by South Sydney for domestic violence offences.

Walker, 24, was involved in an incident in October and has been charged with stalking or intimidate intending to cause fear and common assault.

The Rabbitohs said he had been suspended indefinitely and the club had informed the NRL integrity unit.

The Rabbitohs said Walker informed the club of the incident immediately and he has been stood down from pre-season training including South's high altitude training camp in the United States.

The club is investigating with Walker's future to be decided at the conclusion of the matter.

Earlier in the year Walker signed with the Rabbitohs for the 2015 and 2016 NRL seasons after impressing for Queensland Cup side Easts Tigers.

The 24-year-old turned down offers from the Melbourne Storm and Gold Coast Titans to sign with the 2014 premiers.

It comes in the wake of Souths centre Kirisome Auva'a being banned indefinitely by the NRL for domestic violence offences.

Auva'a was earlier this month found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend in Melbourne.

He pleaded guilty to charges of recklessly causing injury but no conviction was recorded.

He was initially fined $2000 and suspended for seven days by Souths, however the NRL came down hard on the premiership-winning centre following his guilty verdict, banning him until at least round 23 next year.

Auva'a must undergo counselling and show behavioural change before returning to the NRL.

The NRL and Rabbitohs were roundly criticised for their initial reactions to the Auva'a case.

The NRL said in a statement it supported the club's move to suspend Walker and there was no place in the game for domestic violence.
