NRL Warriors' doctor Mayhew out of coma

Warriors doctor John Mayhew, in hospital after a cardiac arrest, is no longer in an induced coma and is progressing well, his family says.

Warriors NRL doctor John Mayhew is out of an induced coma and is progressing well as he recovers from a cardiac arrest.

Mayhew had an excellent night in Auckland Hospital, his family said in a statement on Thursday.

"He is no longer in an induced coma and is progressing well," the statement said.

"John has been talking with his family and is very comfortable."

The family said it was grateful and humbled by the many messages it had received.

Mayhew, also a former All Blacks doctor, was taken to North Shore Hospital on Tuesday night after suffering a cardiac arrest as a result of a heart problem.

He was resuscitated and placed in intensive care, and later transferred to Auckland hospital.

NZME reported that he collapsed after an exercise class.

Mayhew, 60, has worked with various sports and was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to sports medicine in the New Year's Honours list.

He was the All Blacks doctor for 131 Tests over 15 years and has been with the Warriors NRL club for most of the past decade.
