NSW and ACT residents are preparing for an evening of wild weather, with some motorists wrapping their cars in foam or cardboard to protect them from the forecast hail.
The Bureau of Meteorology warned widespread thunderstorms will arrive on Tuesday evening particularly across southeastern and central NSW.
The warning has prompted some residents to take extreme precautions to protect their vehicles, sharing their efforts on social media.
Last month, the nation's capital was pelted with golf ball-size hail that resulted in severe damage to properties and vehicles.
On Tuesday, Sydney and Canberra could experience severe storms but the main focus will be the Illawarra region and up towards the Central Coast, meteorologist Dean Narramore said.
"We could have some very dangerous thunderstorms there with very large hail, damaging winds and very heavy rainfall," Mr Narramore said.
Storms will hit NSW on Tuesday afternoon and stretch into the evening. They could occur anywhere from the Victorian border to Queensland.
"Severe thunderstorms with potentially damaging winds are developing through parts of the southeast. Storms are developing quickly," the Bureau of Meteorology tweeted.
Some places could receive up to 50 millimetres while other areas could miss out altogether, the bureau said.
The storm activity will shift more to central and northern NSW on Wednesday with the wet weather clearing later in the week. But the recurring rain doesn't mean the heat won't return.
"We can get quite a few heatwaves and bursts of heat as we get into March," Mr Narramore said.
