NSW batsman Daniel Hughes struck on helmet

NSW opener Daniel Hughes has suffered a concussion from a blow to the helmet during his side's one-day cup elimination final against Victoria.

NSW opener Daniel Hughes has retired hurt with concussion after being struck on the helmet during the one-day cup elimination final at Drummoyne Oval.

Hughes hit the deck on Friday after misreading a bouncer from Victoria paceman Peter Siddle but was quickly back on his feet.

The 27-year-old was ushered into the change rooms by John Orchard, the same doctor who treated Phillip Hughes when he suffered a fatal blow during a Sheffield Shield game in 2014.

Orchard ruled Daniel Hughes was unfit to resume his innings, meaning it's likely he will also be forced to miss Sunday's final should NSW advance.

Nick Larkin replaced Daniel Hughes in NSW's batting order under Cricket Australia's new concussion rules, which were changed following Phillip Hughes' death.

Siddle was clearly distressed after the incident and one of many concerned Victoria players to rush in and check on the batsman's welfare.

Daniel Hughes was taken to hospital after being struck on the back of the neck during a Sydney grade game in 2015.

"I was OK, thankfully, but it was quite a scary moment," Hughes told News Corp Australia this week.

"Luckily for me it just hit me in the jaw and it more concussed me than anything. A few people around the ground were a bit scared for me but the guys there took the precaution and took me to the hospital to get checked out.

"I do wear the Stemguards now. Most of the guys wear them. I feel a bit more at ease with the Stemguards on the back of the helmet."
