Changes to a New South Wales regional relocation scheme come into effect on January 1.

The government will now offer $10,000 for skilled workers relocating from Sydney to regional centres in a push to meet jobs demands there.

The grant will apply to workers who move more than 100 kilometres from their current city location to take up full-time work.

Meanwhile, an existing $7000 grant for homeowners, seeking to relocate from the city to the bush, will be expanded to include long-term renters.

The government says it aims to relocate 470,000 people to regional areas by 2021.

Minister for Regional Infrastructure Andrew Stoner told Biwa Kwan he is hopeful of meeting that target.
