A five-year-old boy has been airlifted to hospital after he was hit by a car while riding his bike near Wollongong.

Police say they've been told the boy was riding on the footpath with other children at Silstone Avenue, Horsley, when he went onto the road and was hit by a Nissan Patrol just after 3pm on Saturday.

The boy was airlifted to Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick.

The driver of the Nissan, a man in his 30s, was uninjured but has been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
