The blaze broke out around 1pm (AEDT) on Friday in the Booti Booti National Park near Forster, forcing the closure of roads in the area and isolating the town of Green Point.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control about 8.30pm and those Green Point residents who had left earlier returned to their homes.

Police said in a statement on Saturday they were treating the fire as suspicious.
All roads in the area have been reopened.
