NSW cabinet shake-up set to be revealed

A new-look cabinet is expected to be announced by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian a week after her historic state election win.

The new cabinet is likely to be announced on Sunday, with many in government expecting Ms Berejiklian to make several key changes to her front bench.

Two MPs, Gabrielle Upton and Ray Williams, announced on Saturday they will not seek reappointment in the ministry.

Environment Minister Ms Upton, who served as the first female attorney-general of NSW and held the Family and Community Services portfolio, said she would not seek a role in the new cabinet.

Multiculturalism Minister Mr Williams also announced he has not sought to join the next cabinet.

There is speculation the premier could merge several portfolios to bring down the size of cabinet.

Several ministers retired at the last election, including Troy Grant (Police) and Pru Goward (Family and Community Services), leaving room for new blood in the party room.

Water and Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair also stepped down in the days after the election.

Liberal MPs Gareth Ward, Mark Coure and Alistair Henskens have been tipped to receive a promotion.

Rob Stokes has been tipped to regain planning, which he held between 2015 and 2017. Some believe planning could be merged with housing and other portfolios.

Mr Blair's water portfolio is seen by many as a poisoned chalice, but Nationals leader John Barilaro will need to hand it to an MP capable of handling the drought-ravaged regions.

One government MP told AAP "I'd go to the back bench before I took Water".

Another government insider believes the water portfolio will be kept in the upper house, where it will garner less attention. That means Nationals MP Sarah Mitchell could be asked to take on the role.

Matt Kean has reportedly been touted as a new Environment Minister.

The Roads portfolio could be split into regional and metropolitan arms, some suggested.
