Sydney is being battered by gale force winds and heavy rain brought by a Tasman low and a cold front.

The strong and gusty winds are being felt along the south coast, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90km/h, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

The winds are expected to travel up the coast during the morning, bringing with them heavy thunderstorms. There will be heavy surf and people are being warned to stay away from the water.

Areas most affected by the damaging winds and rain are Port Macquarie, Taree, Newcastle, Gosford, Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Batemans Bay and Eden.
